Prime Minister Gough Whitlam Pours Soil Into Hand Of Traditional Land Owner (Gurindji) Vincent Lingiari (Wattle Creek), Northern Territory, 1975/2013. Digital c-type photograph, signed, dated and titled in ink verso, 120 x 120cm. Framed.
Illustrated on page 81, In Dreams. Mervyn Bishop: Thirty Years of Photography, 1960-1990. Held in AGNSW, NGA. Bishop commenced a four year photography cadetship with the Sydney Morning Herald in 1963 (where he worked for seventeen years), becoming Australia's first Aboriginal press photographer. He was commissioned by the Department of Aboriginal Affairs to document this historic event of handing back the land to the Indigenous people. This picture was shot in colour and then converted to black-and white for publishing purposes. Only a few prints were made by Bishop before 1991 when he returned to his negatives to print for his touring show In Dreams.

Bust Of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, 1975. Bronze on sandstone plinth, signed lower right, 50 x 28 x 31cm (bust), 7 x 26 x 22cm (plinth).

Provenance: Lance Ebert (sculptor's agent). The bust was completed and delivered to Whitlam the day after he was dismissed in November 1975. Accompanying the bust is a facsimile letter dated 1995 from Gough Whitlam to Michael Knight, Minister for Public Works and Services which reads "I commend to you Drago Marin Cherina, sculptor and conceptual land mark artist. I have known him as a renowned sculptor for over 20 years, both at home and abroad. In 1975 he did a great bust and plaque of me. He was born in Yugoslavia (Croatia), and in my office, in the presence of Jim McClelland, the responsible minister, he received his certificate of citizenship." A photograph taken in 1972, illustrated on page 174 in Drago Marin Cherina Sculp tures: 1967-1977, shows Whitlam and Cheirina with the working plaster of this sculpture.

Leaflet contains a statement by Cherina, which includes "He's [Whitlam] opened Australia to the world by giving Australia international strength. I hope people will express their loyalty by their vote and buying my plaque as a donation to the Labor party to help his fight 'which must be won for Australia's sake'." Ref: Canberra Times, 21/11/75. The accompanying leaflet is extremely rare.
