135 Anon
[Champagne Makers In Pierry, Champagne-Ardenne, France], c1854.
Pair of albumen paper photographs, (a)
number "1854" appears in image centre right and is
annotated "Pierry" in pencil in an unknown hand on
backing below image, (a) 10.5 x 15cm, (b)
9.4 x 15.8cm. (a) Minor foxing and crazing to image.
Each laid down on original backing.
Images
probably taken at a Champagne house in Pierry, Champagne-Ardenne,
France. (a) Appears to depict
the entire process of bottling Champagne. The first figure in
the right side of the image is removing the sediment from the
bottle, the second is adding "dosage", a mixture of
sugar and Champagne, to sweeten the wine, while the third person
stands at the bottling machine where the cork is inserted. The
seated person with a dog in front of him appears to be putting
the protective wire on the cork, and the female figure on the
left side could be labelling the bottle. (b) Shows parts of the bottling process,
again from right to left.
